infotainment

infotainment
Infotainment is a mixture of instructional and entertainment material. Multimedia encyclopedias or interactive CD-ROMs are sold as educational material for children. Adults question the intellectual rigour in material deliberately aimed at catching the eye of the MTV generation, but many teachers defend it as ‘appropriate packaging’. The term has also been applied disparagingly to material which purports to be authentic but is not. Stephen Spielberg’s Amistad (1997) was accused of masquerading as ‘the truth’ when it was in reality both a sanitized and politicized version of history. Accompanying ‘study packs’ distributed free to schools were treated with scepticism because of their potential commercial agenda. However, many welcome infotainment as a means of rescuing a generation ‘lost’ to television.
